Casual and Non-Casual Posts
A teacher who is employed in a post-primary school under a contract for a period of more than 150 hours but less than a full school year is classified as a non-casual part-time substitute teacher. A teacher who is employed for less than 150 hours in the school year is classified as a casual part-time substitute teacher.
A casual/non casual part-time teacher may be appointed for a fixed period of time during the school year as a substitute or to meet a particular short term need provided such appointment is in accordance with DES regulations.
Payment of casual/non casual part-time teachers is made through the OLCS system at a daily/hourly rate calculated by the DES in accordance with DES CL 54/2017. Provision is also made for the provision of holiday pay appropriate to the level of service given.
Regular Part-time Posts (RPT)
A Regular Part-Time Teacher is a part-time teacher who:
Is registered with the Teaching Council
Has the basic academic qualifications as for permanent wholetime teachers
Is timetabled for a fixed number of teaching hours per week for the full school year.
Such teachers are entitled to a contract which may be fixed term or a Contract of Indefinite Direction. New Regular Part-time Posts must be advertised by the Board of Management provided they fall within the authorised allocation of teachers. No Regular Part-time appointments may be made after 31st October in any given year.
Permanent Wholetime Posts (PWT)
A Permanent Wholetime Teacher (PWT) is a wholetime teacher who is employed on a contract of indefinite duration subject to the pay and conditions of service laid down from time to time by the Minister.
