Applications by Secretarial or Maintenance Staff for special leave without pay for career breaks may be granted, as a general rule by the Board of Management. A career break may not be allowed for the purpose of taking up alternative employment within the State.

Posts vacated by staff on career break may be filled on a temporary basis and on fixed term contracts only with the approval of the Department of Education and Skills. The filling of these posts is subject to the moratorium in the public service that has been in place since 2009.

It should also be noted that Secretarial or Maintenance Staff who take a career break may be comprehended by the moratorium in the Public Service and may not be allowed back on the DES payroll following a career break. This should be clarified with the DES prior to granting a career break.

Health Declaration: Where a career break is preceded by a period of ill-health leave, a medical certificate of fitness to resume duty must be submitted prior to resumption of duty.
