The appointment of DES approved Secretarial and Caretaking Staff is a matter for the Board of Management. (Deed of Trust Articles of Management, Section 9). Boards are advised to draw up a procedure for such appointments, including advertising in the public press, nomination of a selection committee and criteria for appointment. Regard should be had for gender balance in the nomination of the selection committee.
In the case of such appointments the Board should be aware of:
Conditions of Service and Statement of Duties of Whole-time Clerical Officers
Contract for Caretakers in Community and Comprehensive Schools
as issued by the Department of Education and Skills from time to time. Such appointments are permanent and pensionable and appointees are expected to give statutory notice of intention to resign.
All appointments are subject to Garda Vetting as outlined the Management Section of ACCS website at School Management/Garda Vetting/Vetting of Non-Teaching Staff
The appointment of additional staff to whole time, part-time or temporary posts should follow the same procedures as for fulltime staff. Contracts and Conditions of Service must be prepared by the Board of Management in accordance with the specific purpose of the appointment.
On appointment, all non-teaching staff are subject to a probation period of 12 months. At the end of that period the appointment may be confirmed, probation continued for a further period or terminated as the Board may decide
Boards are advised to provide formal induction for all staff.
