Final Reminder: Invitation to ACCS SEN One-Day Conference - Mullingar Park Hotel, Wednesday, 28th of February 2024, 9.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.

The ACCS SEN Sub-Committee invites you to attend this one-day conference “Leading Excellence in Inclusive Practices in Community & Comprehensive Schools” in The Mullingar Park Hotel, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on Wednesday, 28th February 2024, from 9.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.

The event has been planned to support schools in a practical and relevant way in their work on planning, coordination, and implementation of SEN at school level. (draft agenda attached)

In January 2024, the NCSE published its landmark policy advice paper on special schools and classes entitled “An Inclusive education for an Inclusive society”. The NCSE policy advice sought to consider how existing good practices could be incorporated and further developed in the design of an inclusive education system where children have the opportunity to learn in their local school with their siblings and peers.

At this time also the Department of Education has published new guidelines on the revised model of SET allocation to schools. These guidelines detail how mainstream post-primary schools utilise their special education teaching resources to support the meaningful inclusion of all young people in their learning and in the life of the school community.

We are delighted that Martina Mannion, Assistant Secretary General from the Department of Education with responsibility for Special Education and members of her team will present on the Department’s vision for SEN in our schools going forward. We are also delighted to be joined by John Kearney, CEO of the NCSE who along with his colleagues will speak about resources and supports which the NCSE puts in place in our schools. In the afternoon, three concurrent workshops will allow delegates to choose different topics of interest within the area of SEN. These workshops are designed by our member schools and are hugely practical and relevant to all schools in supporting students with SEN.

ACCS will collate any queries submitted by schools beforehand and these will be included in the materials covered on the day. Please email any queries re SEN/Inclusion to Antoinette Nic Gearailt at antoinettefitz57@gmail.com before 25th February.
